SNN (ScrollingNetworkNews) ✿ ✿ Our Mel and Sydney returned to their nesting box with plenty of bonding occurring..but after 2.5 months of Sydney in the box from Dec 2013 to mid Feb 2014, the lack of prey gifts from Mel ( perhaps due to the severe and historic drought underway in California)and they have forgone the nesting process this year as many other raptors ✿ Compared to other owls of similar size, the Barn Owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Come to my window..

 1:21am -3:07am OBT
Stand off on the porch for over an hour where it appeared that Mel and the owl on the playground fell asleep and would at times look at each other. Mel then retreated to the inside of the box where he toe dusted and then went to chittering sweet nothings to the other owl.
By this time the owl on the playground went and sat on the left side of the porch so it could peer inside to see Mel.

Mel put on a good show for us and was  so cute showing off, twisting his head from side to side and almost upside down. What we don’t know is who the second owl is.. Was it Sydney or a new female looking for a mate? It has been very confusing for us who observe the action since Mel has displayed very different behavior from moment to moment such as the toe dusting and bill snapping to chittering.

Later the unfamiliar owl returned and peeked in the door while Mel flew to the playground and then to the roof where the UFO was and a standoff happened.
