SNN (ScrollingNetworkNews) ✿ ✿ Our Mel and Sydney returned to their nesting box with plenty of bonding occurring..but after 2.5 months of Sydney in the box from Dec 2013 to mid Feb 2014, the lack of prey gifts from Mel ( perhaps due to the severe and historic drought underway in California)and they have forgone the nesting process this year as many other raptors ✿ Compared to other owls of similar size, the Barn Owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Pound for pound, Barn Owls consume more rodents – often regarded as pests by humans – than possibly any other creature. ✿ We remind viewers that sometimes owlets may not survive - the parents will dispose of things in "The Owl Way" -viewer discretion is advised, this is nature and the "Owl way". ✿ ~ ✿ “Animals, like us, are living souls. Adventures with Mel and Syd

Adi has learned that treats arrive thru the magic hole in the door and awaits its first arrival.

Hunter still likes to stay warm under his mom.
Sydney leaves on her first flyabout 9:24p While out Mel arrives with dinner.

The rodentia is too large for either owlet to gulp.

Adelaide & Hunter tried with all their might to unzip the critter but with no success. They decided it was best to wait for mom. Mel popped in again with a small treat 9:50p which Adi had no problem devouring. Syd returned 10:15p (51 minute flyabout). She unzipped the treat, shredded, fed the kidz & herself.

Mel returned with another gopher 12:58a small enough for Adi to enjoy – gulp gone. Still not done for the night he dropped by 1:27a with another large gopher.

Knowing the kidz had problems with the 1st treat Syd unzipped, shredded, fed Adi small pieces but gave Hunter ½ in one big chunk. He eventually polished off the back end.

Syd left on a flyabout 2:41a. While out an owl landed on the roof 4:03a, hopped down to the porch, jumped to the PG, back up to the porch & stuck it’s head in 4:04a. Hunter hissed (so cute). ‘Twas Mel doing a pantry check & left 4:05a. Syd returned 4:10a (1hr 29min flyabout) with ½ a gopher. Adi snagged it gulp gone.
