SNN (ScrollingNetworkNews) ✿ ✿ Our Mel and Sydney returned to their nesting box with plenty of bonding occurring..but after 2.5 months of Sydney in the box from Dec 2013 to mid Feb 2014, the lack of prey gifts from Mel ( perhaps due to the severe and historic drought underway in California)and they have forgone the nesting process this year as many other raptors ✿ Compared to other owls of similar size, the Barn Owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Pound for pound, Barn Owls consume more rodents – often regarded as pests by humans – than possibly any other creature. ✿ We remind viewers that sometimes owlets may not survive - the parents will dispose of things in "The Owl Way" -viewer discretion is advised, this is nature and the "Owl way". ✿ ~ ✿ “Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. They know the peaks and chasms of being.” ― Gary Kowalski, The Souls of Animals ✿ Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled with extreme care and genius." ~ E.O. Wilson

Adventures with Mel and Syd

Sydney is doing a wonderful job mothering her owlets. She is on a good schedule feeding the babies every 2-3 hrs as her food supply allows.
She enjoyed several stretches up off the babies and even got in some daydreaming moments.

The first treat of the night was a small slider mouse. Syd fed the babies as soon as she got it.
Treat 2 was a live bunny. This can be difficult for many viewers when this happens, we advise our sensitive guests be prepared that a "LIVE" treat are brought into the box from time to time and “dispatched” to non live status. This is nature and contains  unedited scenes of the cycle of life which may occur at any time without warning.

*Helpful hints - Stickey notes help to have around as you can put them up on your monitor so you don't have to view, you can also turn down the volume on your PC so you don't have to hear, or you can just click off the site if it's just too much for you to process.

Sydney has been taking more fly abouts as the babies are getting older and able to regulate their body temperature better.

Be looking for Adelaide's eyes to open, her closed eyes are now small slits and appear to be opening
Adi goes into a food coma after a delish meal. Doesn't she look comfortable and snug as a bug in her shag carpet pillow!
