SNN (ScrollingNetworkNews) ✿ ✿ Our Mel and Sydney returned to their nesting box with plenty of bonding occurring..but after 2.5 months of Sydney in the box from Dec 2013 to mid Feb 2014, the lack of prey gifts from Mel ( perhaps due to the severe and historic drought underway in California)and they have forgone the nesting process this year as many other raptors ✿ Compared to other owls of similar size, the Barn Owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Pound for pound, Barn Owls consume more rodents – often regarded as pests by humans – than possibly any other creature. ✿ We remind viewers that sometimes owlets may not survive - the parents will dispose of things in "The Owl Way" -viewer discretion is advised, this is nature and the "Owl way". ✿ ~ ✿ “Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. They know the peaks and chasms of being.” ― Gary Kowalski, The Souls of Animals ✿ Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled with extreme care and genius." ~ E.O. Wilson

Adventures with Mel and Syd

Capture by moobird

Viewers broke out in laughter when they heard Mel snore (screech) in his sleep yesterday afternoon He stepped out onto the porch 5:39pm looked around then took off for the hunting grounds 5:57. Distant & near screeches & deets heard followed by 2 flybys 6:48. Again screeches heard 7:07 & 7:36 before Mel returned 7:41. Syd’s distant screeches heard 8:01 & 8:45. Mel answered her both times with his sweet deets & strutted his stuff with cool dance moves near the door 8:45.
He stepped out onto the porch deeting 11:10 then flew to the greenbelt 11:16.

Kanga gave some of us late night viewers a special look at Mel with many close ups of Mel's precious face as he was up near the front of the box.
Have you ever seen a more beautiful face !!

Screeches heard in the distance 11:30pm.
Incoming deets heard 3:35am with a possible BEV cam branch landing just out of view. Loud screeches heard 4:35.
Mel chose to spend the day in the palms and the box remains empty with no on camera sightings of Sydney.
