SNN (ScrollingNetworkNews) ✿ ✿ Our Mel and Sydney returned to their nesting box with plenty of bonding occurring..but after 2.5 months of Sydney in the box from Dec 2013 to mid Feb 2014, the lack of prey gifts from Mel ( perhaps due to the severe and historic drought underway in California)and they have forgone the nesting process this year as many other raptors ✿ Compared to other owls of similar size, the Barn Owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Pound for pound, Barn Owls consume more rodents – often regarded as pests by humans – than possibly any other creature. ✿ We remind viewers that sometimes owlets may not survive - the parents will dispose of things in "The Owl Way" -viewer discretion is advised, this is nature and the "Owl way". ✿ ~ ✿ “Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. Adventures with Mel and Syd

Viewers patiently waited for Mel’s arrival & were not disappointed when he arrived chittering and dancing at 5:54pm.
Each time a distant screech sounded, Mel answered with sweet chitters.
He seemed to be trying to lure Syd into the Kastle.
He’s so cute!

Playground shook 6:21.
Syd was that you?
Mel moved back, got comfortable then took a nap. He departed at 10:05.

It was a still night till a touch & go landing 2:19am. Mel silently landed on the porch 3:14a, entered, preened & relaxed. Syd disturbed his owl nap with a distant screech 4:41a.

Mel answered again with chitters. He exited to the porch 4:56am, looked around for Syd then took off 4:57. Followed by more loud close screeches heard 5:03 followed by a distant one at 5:05am.

Mel left us viewers a bit fuzzy as to why he would consider leaving!! But the desire to Spend the day with Sydney far outweighed a Day in the Kastle!!
