SNN (ScrollingNetworkNews) ✿ ✿ Our Mel and Sydney returned to their nesting box with plenty of bonding occurring..but after 2.5 months of Sydney in the box from Dec 2013 to mid Feb 2014, the lack of prey gifts from Mel ( perhaps due to the severe and historic drought underway in California)and they have forgone the nesting process this year as many other raptors ✿ Compared to other owls of similar size, the Barn Owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Pound for pound, Barn Owls consume more rodents – often regarded as pests by humans – than possibly any other creature. ✿ We remind viewers that sometimes owlets may not survive - the parents will dispose of things in "The Owl Way" -viewer discretion is advised, this is nature and the "Owl way". ✿ ~ ✿ “Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. They know the peaks and chasms of being.” ― Gary Kowalski, The Souls of Animals ✿ Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled with extreme care and genius." ~ E.O. Wilson

Adventures with Mel & Sydney

Sydney makes her exit

Below Captures by moobird- Mel
Mel was so excited to see his sweetie, he showed up early in the tree 7:01pm. Sydney sensing his presence crouched down & started deeting. This went on for 2 minutes until Mel flew to the porch 7:03. It was a short visit, a touch & go landing then off to the hunting grounds. He was hoping she would follow. She did not.

Mel & Syd exchanged screeches 8:54 then she promptly fell back to sleep. Screeches heard 10:14. Syd stepped out 10:29 then flew off to find her soul mate 10:31. Screeches heard 10:33 followed by Mel or Syd
(see video) appearing in the tree 10:34. He/she disappeared 10:36.

Wee morning screeches 4:01am broke the evening’s silence. Syd arrived 4:05 landing on the porch then off to her favorite tree spot 4:06. As she preened, Mel did a flyby over the Kastle 4:07. Mel’s distant deetings were heard 4:31. Following the sound of his voice, Syd turned her back towards the greenbelt then answered loudly. She took off 4:41 to be with him & returned alone 6:07am and stays for the day.

Lilbirdz eloquently stated, “"Wow, It's as if they went out dancing around their territory."”
