SNN (ScrollingNetworkNews) ✿ ✿ Our Mel and Sydney returned to their nesting box with plenty of bonding occurring..but after 2.5 months of Sydney in the box from Dec 2013 to mid Feb 2014, the lack of prey gifts from Mel ( perhaps due to the severe and historic drought underway in California)and they have forgone the nesting process this year as many other raptors ✿ Compared to other owls of similar size, the Barn Owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Pound for pound, Barn Owls consume more rodents – often regarded as pests by humans – than possibly any other creature. ✿ We remind viewers that sometimes owlets may not survive - the parents will dispose of things in "The Owl Way" -viewer discretion is advised, this is nature and the "Owl way". ✿ ~ ✿ “Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. They know the peaks and chasms of being.” ― Gary Kowalski, The Souls of Animals ✿ Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled with extreme care and genius." ~ E.O. Wilson

Adventures & NiteTime Antics w/Mel & Syd

It started with a bang with local fireworks in O'side at 9:30pm

Then an owl in the trees.

Upon entry, Sydney hissed at Mel. He moved to the back left corner for some sleep. She moved to the front keeping one sharp eye on him. Was Sydney happy to have Mel with her in the box?Between the hissing and the stares from her to him and some chittering, one can wonder.
What does this all mean?
Sigh, if only we knew!

OH my!
Body language speaks volumes.
Mel tries to sneak past Sydney to make his exit
He stops and ponders if its a good idea to go pass her
Sydney hears something outside, A 3rd owl screeched 11:16pm, Mel stepped out 11:57pm then flew off 11:58pm. Syd decided to go back to sleep. She stepped out 3:05am looked around then departed 3:08. She returned to her tree 5:33am and then flew off to enjoy another day outside of the box.

Sydney with the feather stuck on her nose brought a laugh to the chat room.
I think Mel thought it was pretty funny too
