SNN (ScrollingNetworkNews) ✿ ✿ Our Mel and Sydney returned to their nesting box with plenty of bonding occurring..but after 2.5 months of Sydney in the box from Dec 2013 to mid Feb 2014, the lack of prey gifts from Mel ( perhaps due to the severe and historic drought underway in California)and they have forgone the nesting process this year as many other raptors ✿ Compared to other owls of similar size, the Barn Owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Pound for pound, Barn Owls consume more rodents – often regarded as pests by humans – than possibly any other creature. ✿ We remind viewers that sometimes owlets may not survive - the parents will dispose of things in "The Owl Way" -viewer discretion is advised, this is nature and the "Owl way". ✿ ~ ✿ “Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. They know the peaks and chasms of being.” ― Gary Kowalski, The Souls of Animals ✿ Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled with extreme care and genius." ~ E.O. Wilson

Adventures & NiteTime Antics

Boomer returns once again at 8:06pm after spending the day in the palmz. He is greeted by Maggie with some lovings ( beak kissing – wink ) before entering the box. They both leave around 8:18pm to begin their hunting lessons. Viewers were please to witness 2 rooftop treat deliveries. 1st was a gopher to Maggie which eventually was brought to the playground. BEV cam gave us an excellent angle for viewing. 2nd was a headless rabbit to Boomer. Boomer also brought it to the playground lugging it back and forth along the edge defending it from Maggie. Boomer displayed a technique called mantling defined as the action of hunching shoulders and spreading wings over a recent kill to conceal it from other birds and predators who would be potential thieves. Good job Boomer in achieving another milestone. She eventually flew to the roof and then to the trees across the way to dine in peace.

Mags looks at the target of the parent flying in with his dinner. It was a perfect beak to beak hand off.

 Back to playground antics.
Thank you RaptorRapture of the SPO for your videos

Both owlets are in the box today..
