SNN (ScrollingNetworkNews) ✿ ✿ Our Mel and Sydney returned to their nesting box with plenty of bonding occurring..but after 2.5 months of Sydney in the box from Dec 2013 to mid Feb 2014, the lack of prey gifts from Mel ( perhaps due to the severe and historic drought underway in California)and they have forgone the nesting process this year as many other raptors ✿ Compared to other owls of similar size, the Barn Owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Canary Palms

The Canary Island date palm is home to many Barn Owl nest and a favorite roost site for them here in Ca.
 The Hungry Owl project learned people were cutting down their Canary Island palms or trimming them to keep away the owl because they didn't like the sound that the barn owlets make.
Solution:
Educate palm-tree owners about the benefits of having owls as neighbors. (Nest boxes are actually safer than palm trees, which the nestlings have a tendency to fall out of the HOP would like to see more of the boxes.
With the help of schools wood shops, kids have been lending a helping hand with the building of nest boxes for the HOP.
