SNN (ScrollingNetworkNews) ✿ ✿ Our Mel and Sydney returned to their nesting box with plenty of bonding occurring..but after 2.5 months of Sydney in the box from Dec 2013 to mid Feb 2014, the lack of prey gifts from Mel ( perhaps due to the severe and historic drought underway in California)and they have forgone the nesting process this year as many other raptors ✿ Compared to other owls of similar size, the Barn Owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Pound for pound, Barn Owls consume more rodents – often regarded as pests by humans – than possibly any other creature. ✿ We remind viewers that sometimes owlets may not survive - the parents will dispose of things in "The Owl Way" -viewer discretion is advised, this is nature and the "Owl way". ✿ ~ ✿ “Animals, like us, are living souls. They are not things. They are not objects. Neither are they human. Yet they mourn. They love. They dance. They suffer. Trivia Answer is...

Eastern Grass Owls - Tyto ( Longimembris ){Philippines}
They can be distinguished from all other Tyto Owls by their long legs with protruding feet in flight.The legs very long compared with other Tyto species (about fifteen per cent longer), with feathering on the lower parts reduced to a few bristles. Incubation is thought to be around
42 days (assumed to be similar to the African Grass Owls).

EGO Tyto (Longimembris pithecops) {Taiwan}
This species is adapted for life on the ground, and normally hides in long grass. Voice: Appears to be more silent than the Barn Owl, the normal call being a hissing scream similar to a Barn Owl. In loudness and harshness it is about midway between a Barn Owl and Masked Owl..

African Grass Owl (Tyto capensis)
Africa : Subsaharan Africa from Ethiopia and Cameroun south to South Africa. Grass Owls differ in appearance from their cousins the Barn Owl in being larger, with stronger contrast between the upper and lower body. The upperparts are dark brown and the underparts whitish. The face is also rounder than that of the Barn Owl. This owl species makes its unlikely home in wetland habitat. They roost on the ground in drainage lines or in areas that have not been burnt or trampled by cattle. They are found on the eastern side of South Africa in areas of higher rainfall which facilitates their preference for long thick, rank. Males and females roost apart during the day. When they breed, she lays up to 4 eggs at either spot. The eggs are laid on a pad of grass at the end of inter-leading grassy passageways, made by the parent owls.
Footnote: They're other Tyto's that also have a incubation period of 42 days, like the Lesser Sooty Owl, so if you answered with the "Sooty" you are also correct..
Well done !
